The numbers no one likes to hear

The cost of a stay in a long-term care facility in Israel runs ₪8,000–20,000 a month, depending on the type of care and the location. One year of intensive home care can cost ₪150,000. An institutional setting — ₪200,000–240,000 a year.

Against that backdrop, long-term care insurance that charges ₪200–500 a month suddenly looks different.

Why people put off the decision

The most common reason: "I'm still young, I have time." But that's exactly where the problem hides. Long-term care insurance is bought based on health status — not age alone. Someone who waits until age 60 and then discovers they have high blood pressure, diabetes, or a back problem may find themselves uninsured, or insured with significant exclusions.

⚠️ Long-term care insurance is one of the few types of insurance where the option to buy can close on you because of your health status — not just because of age.

What to check before you buy

Definition of a care event

A broad definition — such as "inability to perform 2 of 6 daily activities" — is preferable to a narrow one. Read the fine print.

Waiting period

Most policies include a waiting period of 60–90 days from the event until payments begin. Check how long it is and how the interim is funded.

Age and amount ceilings

What is the monthly sum insured? Does it adjust with inflation? Up to what age do you pay?

Existing coverage vs. new

Some pension tracks and insurance companies already include a degree of long-term care coverage — before buying a new policy, check what you already have.

The right age to buy

Between 45 and 55 — that's the optimal window. Early enough that the premium is cheap and there aren't many health issues to close doors, late enough that you already understand the need.

Someone past age 60 isn't out of options, but it's worth moving quickly. Every year that passes narrows the choices and raises the price.
